Jalan Timah, George Town, Penang

Jalan Timah, George Town

Jalan Timah is a narrow two-way road within the George Town city centre. It runs along the southern side of M Mall 020, connecting Jalan Kampung Jawa Baru to its west with Brick Kiln Road to the east.

The area just north of the road was once a tin-smelting plant owned by Eastern Smelting, hence the name of the road. Today, the tin-smelting facility has been replaced by the Penang Times Square and M Mall 020.

A couple of animal welfare organisations, as well as a department of the Penang Island City Council, are also based here.

Etymology

Jalan Timah means 'Tin Road' in Malay. Indeed, the area between Dato' Keramat Road and Jalan Timah was once a tin-smelting plant operated by Eastern Smelting since the late 19th. century.

The Birch Regency also serves as the rear entrance of M Mall 020, part of Penang Times Square.

History

Jalan Timah was probably created due to the adjacent tin-smelting activities between the late 19th. century and the late 20th. century. The facility was closed down for good in the latter half of the 20th. century.

At the start of the 21st. century, the former tin-smelting facility was acquired and redeveloped as Penang Times Square. The Birch Regency, part of Penang Times Square, was built along the northern side of Jalan Timah.

In 2015, M Mall 020, which has a rear entrance along Jalan Timah, was opened.
