Prangin Mall is located at Prangin Road (Dr. Lim Chwee Leong Road), George Town.
Prangin Mall is one of the three shopping malls in the heart of George Town. Along with 1st. Avenue Mall, Prangin Mall was initially conceived as part of the larger KOMTAR project.
Completed in 2000, Prangin Mall was the first dedicated shopping mall in George Town. However, the start of the 21st. century also saw the rapid mushrooming of shopping malls all over the city and Prangin Mall has since struggled to keep up with the competition. Today, Prangin Mall caters to the lower- and middle-income Penangites, and is the place to be for cheaper electronic gadgets.
Its main anchor tenant is Parkson Grand, which takes up parts of the first four floors of the mall.

Prangin Mall was initially envisioned as the third phase of the KOMTAR project, occupying a plot of land east of KOMTAR along Prangin Road. Construction began in 1997 before the start of the Asian financial crisis. Opened in 2001, Prangin Mall was the first shopping mall in George Town; before that, KOMTAR and GAMA Supermarket & Departmental Store were the major retail centres in the city centre.
As it turned out, Prangin Mall was the start of the proliferation of shopping malls across George Town. Soon after its opening, the more upmarket Gurney Plaza was launched, posing a direct competition to Prangin Mall. Since then, more shopping malls have been opened, such as the Penang Times Square, Gurney Paragon and 1st. Avenue Mall right next door to Prangin Mall.
In spite of this, Prangin Mall has managed to retain its customer base of lower- to middle- income Penangites. This is due to the larger number of cheaper-priced outlets inside the mall. Also, Prangin Mall has focused on becoming a digital mecca of George Town by offering electronic gadgets like laptops and smartphones at more affordable prices.
In recent years, overhead bridges have been built to link Prangin Mall with the adjacent 1st. Avenue Mall and the ICT Digital Mall inside KOMTAR.
Businesses[]
Other than electronic and digital outlets, the mall contains several fashion and food franchises, such as Starbucks, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Sushi King, Watson, Guardian, Giordano, SUB, Body Glove, Baleno, Takashima, PDI and Padini.
A Lotus Five Star cinema occupies most of the top floor. However, the cinema might seem a little lackluster and run down.
Outside the mall, along Cross Street, several express bus agents are available for those who seek to travel to elsewhere in Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and southern Thailand.
