Nirwana Road, George Town

Nirwana Road is a narrow two-way street within the George Town city centre. It links Lim Eow Thoon Road to the north with Anson Road to the south.

This minor road passes through Taman Nirvana, a residential area where several other roads are also given Buddhism-related names, such as Dharma Road and Bodhi Avenue.

Etymology[]

Nirwana Road, and Taman Nirvana as a whole, were developed by members of the Penang Buddhist Association, which coincidentally is situated close to this area. Hence, the roads within Taman Nirvana are named after Buddhist-related teachings and holy items.

Acccording to the Oxford dictionary, Nirvana represents the ultimate goal of all Buddhists, where a transcendent state of perfection is achieved by removing the sense of self, suffering and desire. Upon reaching this state, the Buddhist will be released from the karmic cycle of death and rebirth.
