Aboo Sittee Lane, George Town, Penang

Aboo Siti Lane, George Town

Aboo Siti Lane is a narrow one-way lane within the George Town city centre. It runs between Burmah Road to the north and Macalister Road to the south.

The lane has been in existence since at least the late 19th. century and formed part of a Muslim settlement. Remnants of that settlement can still be seen, in the form of Malay bungalows built in the Nusantara style.

Etymology

Aboo Siti Lane sign

Aboo Siti Lane was named after Abu Siti, the leader of a Bangsawan troupe. Bangsawan is a form of Malay opera which was invented in George Town in the late 19th. century. Abu Siti's troupe, known as 'Kumpulan Pusi Indera Bangsawan', was founded in the 1890s and went on to perform throughout the then British Malaya.

Aboo Siti Lane was also called Sam3seng3 Hang33, which meant the 'Gangster's Alley', by the Hokkiens. This alludes to the presence of Chinese gangsters along the lane in the olden days.

History

Thai Pak Kong, Aboo Sittee Lane, George Town, Penang

The abandoned Thai Pak Kong Temple at Aboo Siti Lane

When Aboo Siti Lane was created, it formed part of a Muslim settlement that was populated by both Malays and Indian Muslims. This settlement has since disappeared, but the houses that were once inhabited by the Muslims remain. Kampung houses, akin to those found in rural villages, can be found alongside Nusantara-style bungalows that were once home to richer Muslim traders.

As the lane was once home to a mainly Muslim population, the Bangsawan opera used to be the main form of entertainment within the settlement, drawing Muslim and Chinese residents alike.
